Augmented reality is no longer a gimmick – it's a strategic tool for retailers who want to sell their products in a more tangible, emotional, and therefore more successful way.

What sounded like science fiction just a few years ago is now a reality at Shopify: the platform offers out-of-the-box support for 3D models, AR integration, and even tools that allow retailers to capture their products directly as 3D models using a smartphone – without any special equipment or external agencies.

Shopify 3D & AR – what's already possible today

Shopify has set a new standard with its latest developments:

  • 3D model upload directly in the product editor: Merchants can upload models in GLB or USDZ format – exactly the formats required by iOS and Android for AR applications.
  • Automatic format conversion: Shopify works in the background to ensure that models are optimally prepared for mobile devices – a crucial step in avoiding compatibility issues.
  • AR support on product pages: Integration is seamless – users can switch to AR view directly in their browser via a button and place products realistically in their environment.
  • Mobile 3D scanning feature in the Shopify Admin app: Products can be captured directly as 3D models using a smartphone – a feature that opens up new possibilities for small retailers in particular, without the need for external service providers or expensive hardware.

What this means for retailers

Today, online retailers no longer sell just through images and prices – they sell experiences. Customers want to know how big a product is, how it looks in a room, or whether it matches the rest of their interior. This is exactly where augmented reality comes in – and this is exactly where Shopify provides the perfect foundation.

And this is exactly where we come in

With Home of Apps, we integrate these Shopify innovations into our native app platform. For our customers, this means AR support directly in the app, seamlessly linked to the 3D models already maintained in the Shopify store. No duplicate maintenance, no special solutions – just a well-rounded, forward-looking shopping experience on the smartphone.

And that's just the beginning. Together with our partner augmentify.me, we are working to make AR in e-commerce not only possible, but truly suitable for the masses – with a focus on performance, data protection, and user-friendliness.

Curious?

Then now is the right time to strategically integrate AR into your business model. Home of Apps gets you live in just a few days – with features that only big brands can usually afford.
